What is a certified Practitioner

A certified Prosthetists or Orthotist is a highly trained health professional that has successfully passed a rigorous national Certification Examination as set by the Canadian Board for Certification of Prosthetists and Orthotists, C.B.C.P.O. This examinations sets the high level of competency necessary to practice in the field of prosthetics and orthotics. Education in the field is obtained through acceptance and completion of a highly specialized post graduate program teaching anatomy, physiology, biomechanics and prosthetic/orthotic theory. Following this two year program, graduates enter the residency program where a further two years of supervised work experience is necessary to become eligible to sit the three day certification exam consisting of written, practical and oral components. Successful completion of this process results in the award of "Certification"
A certified practitioner in either orthotic or prosthetic field, is the most knowledgeable and highly skilled professional in the science of limb replacement or correction and support of all joints and segments of the human body, from toe to head.
